How to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: 5 Biblical Steps

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is one of the most powerful experiences available to every believer in Jesus Christ. Yet many Christians have never received this gift, either because they were never taught about it or because they were told it was only for the early church. Nothing could be further from the truth. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is God’s promise to every believer, and it is available to you right now.

When Jesus walked the earth, He made it clear that His followers would need supernatural power to fulfill their calling. In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His disciples, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This was not a suggestion—it was a promise. Jesus knew that without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, His followers would be unable to accomplish the mission He had given them.

What Is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Before we discuss how to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we need to understand what it is. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience from salvation. When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. However, being born again and being baptized in the Holy Spirit are two different experiences.

Salvation brings the Holy Spirit into your life. The baptism of the Holy Spirit releases the power of the Holy Spirit through your life. This is why Jesus told His disciples—who were already believers—to wait in Jerusalem until they received power from on high (Luke 24:49). The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an empowerment for service, witness, and victorious living.

Throughout the book of Acts, we see a consistent pattern when people received the baptism of the Holy Spirit—they spoke in tongues. On the Day of Pentecost, Acts 2:4 records, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and a supernatural prayer language that allows you to pray beyond the limitations of your natural understanding.

Step 1: You Must Be Born Again

The first step to receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit is to ensure you are born again. You cannot receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit if you have not first received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. John 3:3 records Jesus saying, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

If you have never accepted Jesus, the good news is that salvation is available to you right now. Romans 10:9 promises, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Salvation is not about being good enough or earning God’s favor. It is about receiving the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

Step 2: Ask Your Heavenly Father

The second step is simple but essential—ask. Jesus taught us in Luke 11:13, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Notice that Jesus did not say God might give the Holy Spirit. He said God will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask.

Many believers never receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit simply because they never ask for it. They assume it will happen automatically, or they wait for some dramatic experience to fall on them. But Jesus made it clear that we must ask. This is not because God is reluctant to give. It is because asking demonstrates faith and desire.

Your prayer does not need to be complicated. You can simply say, “Father, I ask You to baptize me in the Holy Spirit. Fill me with Your power. I receive the gift of tongues and all that You have for me. Thank You for this promise in Jesus’ name.”

Step 3: Receive by Faith

The third step is to receive by faith. Galatians 3:14 tells us that “by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” Faith is the key to receiving everything God has promised. Just as you received salvation by faith, you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit by faith.

Faith means trusting that God has heard your prayer and that He is faithful to His Word. You do not have to feel anything dramatic or see a visible sign to know that God has answered. You simply trust His promise. Faith is not based on feelings or emotions—it is based on the unchanging Word of God.

Some people struggle with receiving because they are waiting to feel something before they believe. But faith comes first, and the experience follows. When you ask God to baptize you in the Holy Spirit, believe that He has done it. Thank Him for it. Expect the manifestation to follow.

Step 4: Open Your Mouth and Speak

The fourth step is where many people get stuck. After you have asked and believed, you must open your mouth and speak. The Holy Spirit will not force you to speak in tongues. He will give you the utterance, but you must do the speaking.

Acts 2:4 says, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Notice the partnership—the Holy Spirit enabled them, but they did the speaking. You will not speak in tongues by accident or against your will. You must cooperate with the Holy Spirit by opening your mouth and allowing the words to come.

This is where faith becomes action. You may feel a stirring in your spirit or sense unfamiliar words forming in your mind. Do not analyze them or try to figure out what language they are. Simply speak them out. It may feel awkward at first, but as you continue to yield to the Holy Spirit, the flow will become more natural.

Step 5: Continue to Be Filled

The fifth step is to understand that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not a one-time event. While the initial baptism is a distinct experience, the Bible encourages us to be continually filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 instructs, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

The Greek verb used here is in the present continuous tense, meaning “keep being filled.” We need fresh infillings of the Holy Spirit regularly. This happens through worship, prayer, speaking in tongues, and spending time in God’s presence. Make it a daily practice to pray in tongues. Use your prayer language to build yourself up in faith.

The Power of a Spirit-Filled Life

When you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, everything changes. You gain a supernatural boldness to share the gospel. You become more sensitive to God’s voice and leading. You have access to the gifts of the Spirit, including healing and miracles. You experience a deeper intimacy with God through your prayer language.

The early church turned the world upside down because they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They healed the sick, cast out demons, and preached the gospel with power. Acts 4:31 records, “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” This same power is available to you.

Jesus promised that we would do even greater works than He did because He was going to the Father and sending the Holy Spirit (John 14:12). The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the key to unlocking this promise. It is not about being more spiritual than others. It is about being equipped for the mission God has called you to.

Take the Step Today

If you have never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, I encourage you to take this step today. Find a quiet place where you can pray without distraction.
